Terminology guidelines for the protection of children from sexual exploitation and sexual abuse

April 16, 2025

ECPAT Luxembourg has released their Second Edition of the Terminology Guidelines for the Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse. These updated guidelines help individuals and organisations understand and use language that is survivor-centred, precise, and free from stigma.

The way we speak about these crimes can either protect children — or cause further harm.

Language shapes action. Inaccurate terms like “child prostitute” or “child pornography” shift blame onto children and distort public understanding.

It takes conscious effort, but it’s easy to start — and we must encourage others to do the same.

Let’s use our words to protect, not perpetuate.

Words matter.
